In celebration of Small Business Week (May 5-11), Flauk is highlighting the stories of some amazing women-owned businesses. Please join us in the movement to #shoplocal and #supportwomen!

We are so excited to introduce you to Heather Sheldon and Elisabeth Graves, the duo of beautiful souls behind ehvents Co., a wedding floral design company based in San Diego, California. We love these brave leap takers who are following their passion for love and florals and learning by doing rather than simply waiting for the perfect moment to begin their dreams.

We asked Heather and Elisabeth about what it’s like to run a local business, who inspires them, and the unique trials and advantages they’ve experienced as a women-owned business. Get ready to adore them as much as we do!

What do you love about running a business in your local community?

As a small and women-owned business in San Diego, we — Elisabeth and Heather (hence ehvents!) — absolutely love getting to know our clients and learning their love stories. By choosing to work with a small business, they’re investing in their community and the best byproduct of that is getting to know the quality people behind those decisions. We have a very visual and engaging process to nail down each couple’s vision for their big day and it’s absolutely amazing to see the unique details unfold. The best part of our role is capturing those special details in the design and overall feel of the event.

Are there any unique challenges that you’ve faced as women in launching or running your company?

In the hospitality industry, we’ve had the pleasure of meeting many hardworking vendors and venue staff who support and refer each other after years of working side by side. While it’s not unique to being female, as a new business, one challenge we’ve had is breaking into some of those established groups in the area. We are constantly looking for ways to get involved without costly networking fees to make up for not being insiders. Also, we made the decision to get started before we had all the answers so we welcome the challenges, and that brave leap was the catalyst for the best things we’ve learned thus far! By realizing this, we’ve been able to laugh and learn from our mistakes.

What unique advantages or perspectives do you bring to the table as female business owners?

Elisabeth was fortunate to grow up with parents who encouraged her to take on challenges with focus, determination, and hard work. Heather had opportunities to learn resilience, perseverance, and dedication early in her life with an unstable family dynamic. It’s been the combination of our experiences as girls in our childhoods to the evolution of becoming strong and empathetic women that make us a dynamic team. One of the things we do differently at ehvents Co. is seek to really understand the couple’s vision by incorporating a visual guide in the planning process. We put the guide together from shared social images and ideas we discuss in the initial consult. By finalizing this visual guide, we’re able to deliver a unique look that’s highly customized with less guess work for design preferences. The final product is always unique to the couple we’re working with and will never be replicated at another event. We feel like this entire process partially comes from the uniquely female perspective of focusing on the core emotional needs of humans taking the plunge into a life together.

Additionally, we offer both floral design and coordination services and there are few companies who do that. We offer our clients discounts for purchasing both services and we’ve found it works really well to be able to design and coordinate the event in tandem and we all know women are great task jugglers!

Share the love: tell us about any of your favorite companies out there run by badass women that we all should know about!
