We built Flauk because we believe everyone should be able to start a business, do what they love, and live the life they want – no matter their financial situation. And while we offer all the services you need to get launched or to grow your business, we also know that many of you may want to do some of this on your own. So here’s our quick “Guide To DIY your Business”.

Figure out your target audience

I cannot emphasize this enough: DO THIS FIRST. Knowing who your target audience is will help make the rest of this so much easier and more cohesive. You need to know who you’re marketing to before you actually invest in marketing. And yes, your logo, brand name, and even website are forms of marketing. So please, stop everything and do this exercise now to figure out who you want to sell your services and products to.

What’s in a name, anyway?

A lot, as it turns out! Just because something sounds great doesn’t mean it makes a great company or brand name. Things to consider when coming up with your company name: is it easy to pronounce and spell? Is it unique and memorable? What does it mean in different languages? (i.e. Hopefully it doesn’t mean “fart” or “turd” unless you’re naming a toilet paper company.) We have a great naming exercise that can help – go ahead and email us at hello@flauk.com if you want it.

Logos and branding

Unless this is your job, please outsource this work. A homemade or amateur logo makes your company (and you) look unprofessional, and having your brother’s best friend’s cousin make you one means you’ll have to re-do it later anyway. Ready to take the plunge? We do awesome logos and branding work. Check out our branding services here.

Products and Services

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to make a successful business. Competition is actually a great thing because it shows there is a market for your product or service. But if you want to stand out (and who doesn’t?) check out the reviews and offerings of your competitors and see what they’re missing. What are reviewers saying they wish this product had? If you need extra help figuring out your unique angle, hit Sarah up for some coaching (your first 30 minute session is free).

Website Design and Development

I also typically advise people to get this done professionally, but for you eager overachievers: check out ShowIt. It’s a great platform that basically allows you to drag and drop to create a custom site. For those of you sticking to Squarespace and WordPress, head over to this blog post about which platform is best for you and why.

This might come as a surprise, but you shouldn’t go into debt to start your business. Consider using a crowdfunding platform like iFundWomen,Kickstarter, or Indiegogo. We love iFundWomen in particular for a few reasons:

  1. You don’t have to invent something new to use the platform
  2. You can start using it today. No need to get your project approved or wait for someone to email you back about your project
  3. You get to keep what you earn – if you don’t reach your goal, that’s ok. You’ll still get what you raised
  4. You don’t have to be a woman to use the platform
  5. They offer coaching, strategy sessions, and a supportive community to help you raise the most money possible
  6. Our very own Sarah Moe is also a business coach on the iFundWomen team!
